When a million new homes are needed nationally, your own neighbourhood is as good a place to look for possible opportunities and implications as anywhere else. Marja Elsinga and Harald Mooij (1MH) met digitally with Tako Postma (TP), ‘Stadsbouwmeester’ (city architect) in Delft since 2019 and overviewing the municipality’s aim to build 15.000 new dwellings before 2040.

Author Biographies

Marja Elsinga, TU Delft

Marja Elsinga is professor of Housing Institutions & Governance at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. She is leading the chair of Housing Institutions & Governance, which is focusing on arrangements for housing that contribute to wellbeing of people in the Global North as well as the Global South. Adequate housing is about proper planning and design, energy efficient materials, processes and installations. To make adequate housing work; institutions and governance are of key importance.

Harald Mooij, TU Delft

Harald Mooij studied architecture and building technology at Delft University of Technology and at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). He is an architect in The Hague and is currently involved in various projects, including the 1M Homes initiative. He has been a lecturer and researcher at Delft University of Technology in the Chair of Architecture and Dwelling since 2004. He writes regularly for professional journals in the Netherlands and abroad, is co-editor of DASH and co-author of the book Housing Design: A Manual, published in 2008 (English edition in 2011).
